Construction of the Purple Line continued this week as a new phase of the ambitious project began. At 3:08 am, UMD construction tore down every building in the Denton Community with everyone still inside to make room for the new metro track.
Several students were awoken around 3:07 by the sound of heavy machinery, followed by the floor crumbling beneath their feet and the collapse of load-bearing walls. By 4 am, Denton, Easton, Elkton and Oakland Halls had all been reduced to rubble.
With hundreds dead and the rest without homes and their personal belongings destroyed, many students and parents were understandably irritated about the supposedly unannounced construction and reached out to UMD President Darryll Pines asking for an explanation.
“We understand that several students are upset that their homes for the last 6 months were torn down with all their belongings and friends inside,” said Pines. “However, may we remind everyone that an email was sent out at 2:59 AM telling students of the upcoming construction, giving them plenty of time to evacuate, take out all of their belongings, and find a new residency. Thus, as stated in section 28903512 Z in the student contract, all calls for compensation for lost property and death of loved ones will be ignored.”
The university then stated in a new email that no new halls are planned to replace the old ones, while admission rates will stay the same. When asked about the possible housing crisis and thousands of new applicants not having a place to live, the university issued a statement which read, “Yeah we don’t care”.
Many have already complained of previous construction projects, such as the 20-foot wide, 3-mile deep chasm that split campus in half, however the university has claimed the new train route will be well worth it. With the new route through Denton completed, Purple Line construction has sped up immeasurably, with the new completion date confirmed for January 2057.
