After being seen at LGBTQ pride parades and touting similar merch, Lockheed Martin has teamed up with the University of Maryland to provide “at least an extra 77 cents” in funding for UMD’s Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies department.

A Google search for “UMD engineering sponsors” yields a list that looks like an infographic for logo design, while a search for “UMD WGSS sponsors” shows image results for gifs of tumbleweeds.

Scholars say feminist theory has value in the STEM field, as it can be used to critique and uncover biases in scientific research. “Scientific sexism” is a concept that, in part, refers to how men’s contributions to science are often taken more seriously. But never mind that—did you know that you can make six figures working for a company that definitely doesn’t have an entire section of their Wikipedia page titled “corruption investigations”?

While women & gender studies courses can provide students with critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of gender and race, historically, UMD and its sponsors have put their money toward other skills. These crucial skills include day-to-day knowledge such as roller coaster engineering and how to do hour-long Mohr’s circle problems by hand.

That’s why Lockheed Martin decided to step in. “I love women, gender, and sexuality. When I see any amount of injustice in the world, I just have to do something about it,” said Rich Mann, a representative for Lockheed Martin. “The only bombs we’re dropping here are truthbombs.”
