COLLEGE PARK, MD–Students are voicing their concerns regarding UMD’s South Campus Dining Hall, with many complaining that the name is simply too difficult to pronounce for students who are not pursuing a linguistics degree. Many are requesting that the name be changed.
“I tried to pronounce that name and got a throbbing headache,” says junior Kaylee Turner, “I had to lie down for a while. The name should be changed to something easier, like ‘a place to go to eat.’”
It seems that the rest of Turner’s sorority house agrees, as her change.org petition boasts a whopping 34 signatures after being up for 4 months.
However, the administration that named the building seems to have no intention of making changes.
“The name ‘South Campus Dining Hall’ is derived from the English language, and it’s pretty much pronounced phonetically, besides one syllable. It’s pronounced ‘sow-th,’ not ‘sooth,’” says a representative for UMD.
The University of Maryland encourages students to get out of their comfort zones and learn to pronounce words they are unfamiliar with, even if it hurts their ego a little bit. Other students have found their own loopholes. Some students have desperately resorted to calling the dining hall by its acronym, “SCDH,” colloquially pronounced “suck-duh.” Used in a sentence: “Do you want to go to suck-duh, dude?”
Others, including freshman Mariana Nicholson have thought up their own solutions.
“Sometimes I’ll ask my friends to go to the Yahentamitsi dining hall instead, just because it’s easier to pronounce,” says Nicholson.
So come on down to UMD’s most infamous dining hall, the South Campus Dining Hall, which offers unique ethnic dishes with names like “mac and cheese.” There’s a seat for you here.
